What Is the Difference Between AI Receptionist and AI Assistant?
This article explains the difference between Voiply's two AI call features and helps business customers understand which one does what.
Voiply offers two AI-powered features for business customers: AI Receptionist and AI Assistant. Both help make sure your callers are taken care of, even when your team is not available. But they work at different moments and do different things. This article explains each one so you can decide which fits your needs — or whether you want to use both.
🤖 AI Receptionist: A Virtual Front Desk for Your Business
The AI Receptionist answers your business calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It uses a natural, human-like voice to greet callers, answer common questions, send calls to the right person or team, and take messages; all automatically.
Think of it as a virtual front desk that is always open, even on nights and weekends.
What it does:
- Answers every incoming call, any time of day or night
- Greets callers with a friendly, natural-sounding voice
- Answers questions your customers ask often
- Routes callers to the right person or department
- Takes messages so no call goes unanswered
The AI Receptionist works for your whole account, not just one user.
To find it: Log in to your Voiply portal, then go to Features > AI Receptionist.

🎤 AI Assistant: Smarter Voicemail for Individual Users
The AI Assistant steps in when a specific team member misses a call. Instead of sending the caller to a standard voicemail, the AI Assistant picks up, offers to transfer the caller somewhere else, takes a message, and emails it to the right person. It also remembers callers who have reached out before.
What it does:
- Picks up missed calls for individual users
- Offers to transfer the caller to another number or team member
- Takes a message and sends it by email
- Recognizes repeat callers
The AI Assistant is off by default. It needs to be turned on separately for each person on your account who wants to use it.
To find it: Log in to your Voiply portal, then go to Features > AI Assistant.

🔒 The portal currently labels this feature "Smart Assistant." This will be updated to "AI Assistant" at launch — confirm the label before publishing.
