      What is a LATA Code? 


      In VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and telecommunications, LATA stands for Local Access and Transport Area. LATA codes are used to identify specific geographic regions where telephone companies are allowed to provide local or long-distance services. The concept of LATAs was introduced after the breakup of the Bell System in 1984, which required regional phone companies to operate within certain boundaries.

      Here's a breakdown of what a LATA code means:

      • Local Access and Transport Area (LATA): A geographic region or boundary that defines where a telecommunications carrier can operate for local and long-distance calling.
      • VoIP and LATA Codes: In VoIP services, LATA codes are relevant for routing calls and ensuring proper interconnection between local exchange carriers (LECs) and long-distance carriers. VoIP providers use these codes to determine call routing and toll charges when connecting to the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN).
